About Us

Piano Service Experience

I have always had a fascination for the piano and an undying love of its sound. I would sit next to my mother, enthralled as she would play an old upright at a friend’s home.  At six years old, I would play my Sunday School songs on a one octave toy piano. My mother determined that I would take piano lessons, which I did for 12 years from age 8 until age 20.

After High School graduation I went to the Moody Church weekly for piano technician
training at the Smith-Carbaugh School of Piano Technology. The teachers were Virgil Smith and
Robert Carbaugh, both faculty of the Music Department of Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.
Carbaugh and Smith had been tuners for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Both were highly
esteemed by the Piano Technician Guild and well published. Thus, I began to tune in the South
Suburbs of Chicago. I was a tuner for Nelsons Pianos and Organs in Hammond, Indiana, and the
Baldwin factory-owned store in Homewood, Illinois. I tuned strictly by the aural training I had
received, of which I am so very thankful.

After moving to Michigan, I had the opportunity to enter retail sales, along with servicing in
homes, churches, schools, and recording studios. I have worked for West Michigan Piano,
Keyboard World, and eventually opened my own store in Hudsonville. I currently represent
Reeder Pianos of Lansing, Michigan, a Baldwin dealership, and I still sell pianos out of my own
workshop in Hudsonville.

Ongoing training that I have enjoyed has included the following:
Baldwin Piano factory at Conway and Jonesboro, Arkansas
Lectures from Steinway & Sons, New York
James Reeder, Rebuilder, of Lansing, MI
Charles R. Walter of the Walter Piano Company and factory at Elkhart
Story and Clark of Grand Haven, MI and Grand Rapids., MI
Design Engineer Bruce Clark of Mason & Hamlin Piano Co. of Haverhill, Massachusetts

Nowadays my time is split between reconditioning pianos in my shop and tuning throughout
Western Michigan. I have been the chief piano technician at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin
Lake, and Radio Station WBLU-WBLV Public Radio. I have several apprentices, young and old
who have done very well. I also participate regularly in the Piano Technician’s Guild meetings.
Throughout my 54 years of servicing pianos, my wife Joyce has been my associate. She is an
accomplished pianist, church organist, and piano teacher of the highest art.
